This listing is for a free crocheted coaster. This simple pattern is a perfect swatch to practice adding embroidery motifs to a crocheted canvas.
The pattern uses US terminology.
The pattern calls for cotton DK yarn, but you are welcome to use any yarn and corresponding hook that you like. As you consider which yarn to use for your coaster/swatch, I recommend choosing something with a high twist and a (semi-) solid, light color. And as you begin exploring the embroidery technique, I encourage you to select a (semi-) solid color with a high contrast.
It is not imperative that you achieve gauge for this project. Your tension should be loose enough that there is a pleasant drape, but taut enough that your stitches can support the addition of the embroidery. I encourage you to play around with different fiber and hook combinations to discover what appeals to you as an embroidery artist!
This pattern is also a perfect starting point to learn how to work single crochet. I have recorded a podcast demonstrating each step, which can be found on my YouTube channel, Bloom Handmade Studio.
