It is easy to imagine reaching for this as your go-to shawl for date night or meeting friends for an evening on the town. The ruffle is eye-catching and makes this piece a joyful accessory. The staggered eyelets are fun to knit and bring additional visual interest to the wrap.

This project begins by casting on the ruffle edge and working this feature first. These stitches are decreased and the body of the shawl is created using short-rows. Pretty eyelets are worked into the design using double yarn overs.

I made my sample for this shawl using Evil Little Goats’ newest fingering weight yarn, Roots, which is 100% Rambouillet wool, superfine / 21+ microns and is both climate beneficial and Fibershed certified. In particular, I love how artists of this craft have taken a skillset of days gone by and modernized the look to appear more contemporary, without sacrificing any of the traditional attention to detail and craftsmanship. This project is a knitter’s take on these modern quilts, as it combines a bright, cheerful palette with a contemporary, geometric pattern. “Kagan’s Quilt” was named using an amalgam of my two muses for this project: Katherine Upitis, designer and maker of the original quilt, and Megan Ingram, dyer of the Lichen and Lace yarn, which I used exclusively in this blanket. Hence, Katherine + Megan -->  Kagan, connoting a perfect match of inspiration and yarn!

This blanket requires roughly 600 grams/2000 meters/or 2200 yards of sock weight yarn.

For my variation, I used Lichen and Lace 80/20 Sock Yarn in the following colorways and amounts:
Natural – 300 grams/1,002 meters /1,095 yards
Amber – 60 grams/200 meters/219 yards
Shrub – 25 grams/85 meters/92 yards
Sweet Pea – 55 grams/184 meters/200 yards
Huckleberry – 45 grams/150 meters/165 yards
Citron – 35 grams/116 meters/128 yards
Blue Lagoon – 25 grams/85 meters/92 yards
Lilac – 35 grams/116 meters/128 yards

My gauge for this blanket was 26 sts and 48 rows over 4”.
Gauge is not critical for this project, but differences could impact yardage needed, especially in the main color. Winters in Athens were brutal in terms of intensity and duration. The ten miles or so that we would travel to AHS in the Cabriolet during the dead of winter felt interminable. But just when you were thinking it might never be warm again, spring would make a most welcome, albeit fleeting, appearance. This wrap pays homage to how glorious it was to be in a Cabriolet when the seasons started to change. That first 50 degree day? The driver’s window would be rolled down. Just enough to let in a hint of the arctic air that was still palpable. A few weeks later? Add a crack in the passenger side window. By the end of April, both front windows would be all the way down. Slowly, but just as surely as spring was making itself known, all the windows would be rolled completely down. And then, on that magical day, when the summer sun was out for good, the top would be peeled back and all bets were off.

THIS PATTERN INCLUDES INSTRUCTIONS FOR A FINGERING WEIGHT WRAP, A DK WEIGHT SCARF AND A FINGERING WEIGHT SCARF. {yay!}

FOR THE FINGERING WRAP:

Yarn:

(LC) 2 skeins of Akara Yarns Organic 2-ply, 115 g, 407 yds/372 m
Pictured in Crystal
(DC) 2 skeins of Akara Yarns Organic 2-ply, 115 g, 407 yds/372 m
Pictured in Rain Cloud

Gauge After Blocking:
20 sts and 24 rows
Per 4” / 10 cm in brioche stitch

Finished Measurements
After Blocking:
16” (40 cm) x 68” (173 cm)

Tools:
US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles
US 8 (5 mm) DPNs for i-cord
Crochet hook Size H (5 mm)
Waste Yarn
Cable needle
Sewing needle
Blocking mat and pins

13 removable stitch markers

FOR THE FINGERING SCARF:
Yarn (Fingering Weight)
(LC) 1 skein of Serendipitous Wool Co
Anu Fingering, 100 g, 400 yds/365 m
Pictured in Crystal
(DC) 1 skein of Viola Merino Singles 4 ply, 115 g, 475 yds/434 m
Pictured in Dew Drop

Gauge After Blocking:
24 sts and 32 rows
Per 4” / 10 cm in brioche stitch

Finished Measurements
After Blocking:
10” (25.5 cm) x 63” (152 cm)

Tools:
US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles
US 8 (5 mm) DPNs for i-cord
Crochet hook Size H (5 mm)
Waste Yarn
Cable needle
Sewing needle
Blocking mat and pins

9 removable stitch markers

FOR THE DK SCARF:
Yarn (Fingering Weight)
(LC) 2 skeins of Akara Yarns Organic DK, 115 g, 260 yds/238 m
Pictured in Confetti
(DC) 2 skeins of Akara Yarns Organic DK, 115 g, 260 yds/238 m
Pictured in I Want Candy

Gauge After Blocking:
20 sts and 24 rows
Per 4” / 10 cm in brioche stitch

Finished Measurements
After Blocking:
11” (28 cm) x 63” (152 cm)

Tools:
US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles
US 8 (5 mm) DPNs for i-cord
Crochet hook Size H (5 mm)
Waste Yarn
Cable needle
Sewing needle
Blocking mat and pins

9 removable stitch markers

Four Squared was inspired by modern, colorful quilting. Without embellishment, it is a simple, easy-to-knit staple, sure to be a go-to favorite in your wardrobe. There are five “corridors” of knitting ready to be adorned with stitching once the knitting has been completed. The increases and decreases that comprise the piece have been constructed in such a way that you can opt to embroider the front and back, the top of the sleeves, the forearms or the long swath from wrist to hip. Or all of the above, if you’re bitten by the stitching bug!

The sweater is knit from the top down, meaning the maker can try the sweater on for a truly customized fit. The first is to play on the words “negative space”, a favorite design concept of mine. I’m always drawn to art that switches from light to dark and vice versa to maximize visual interest. You’ll do just that with this design, simply by changing color dominance and shifting to a new chart. Yet I couldn’t bear to have “Negative” in the title, so I just flipped the script and went with “Positive”.

The second reason for the name is because I love the idea of a design being so encouraging that it makes you feel positive about your abilities.
