As I worked on this unique project, I invariably found myself humming "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music! The vibrant colors! The delicate stitches! The intricate motifs! A luxe swath of soft garter stitches to round it all out!

All this to say, I adored making this wrap and am utterly smitten with the finished piece!

A bit of backstory...

My ideas for this project were sparked by a social media post by the lovely yarn shop, Loop of London. I have often turned to this perfectly-curated store for inspiration and was delighted to have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful kit of wool a few months ago. The kit featured 24 different skeins of wool, dyed by hand using plant extracts by Mette Mehlsen, a Danish artist. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the kit at the time of purchase, but was confident that the muse would strike once I had a chance to see the fibers in person.

Sure enough, once the parcel arrived and I had a chance to "doodle" with the skeins, I knew what I wanted to do: create a piece that showcased the artistry of the dyer, but was also wearable and warm. So I picked a favorite crochet motif and got to work making granny squares. To my delight, I discovered that when working with hues derived from nature, all the colors look incredible together. I enjoyed thinking about how the finished piece would be constructed and finding a beautiful balance between tones and depth of color. Ultimately, half of the piece is made of fifty granny squares in an array of greens, golds, pinks and purples. The granny squares were stitched together using embroidery threads also hand dyed with plant extracts. The lacy technique used to weave the squares together echoes the openness of the crocheted motif beautifully.

The opposite end of the wrap features a large swath of simple knitting with the softest of yarns, a blend of merino wool, yak and silk. I purposefully paired the spectrum of color with a soft taupe, allowing the vibrancy of the granny squares to steal the spotlight of the eye and the knitted side to provide the softness and the warmth. I find the unique duality of the piece to be thrilling! Isn't it delightful when pretty and practical come together so wonderfully?

Dimensions:
This wrap is generously proportioned at 76" (193 cm) long  x 17" (43 cm) wide. It can be worn in a wide variety of ways to showcase color and provide warmth!

Materials:
For the granny squares: 100% wool dyed by hand using plants by Mette Mehlsen in Denmark. The granny squares were woven together using plant dyed thread obtained from Loop of London. The knitted portion of the scarf was made with grey base merino yak silk fingering weight yarn dyed by Moondrake Co. I take great pride and pleasure in sourcing the best materials from around the world.

Care:
Carefully hand wash and rinse in cold water using a wool wash. Do not mix with other garments. Do not agitate excessively or expose to temperature extremes, or the wool could felt. Gently press (not wring!) out excess water with a towel and dry flat in the original shape. Do not hang to dry. Alternatively, you can use a trusted dry cleaner.
