My Sweater Canvas is the latest in a series of my designs in which simple knitting is morphed into unique pieces with the addition of embroidery. Stockinette is truly a perfect canvas to express yourself through stitching. Whether you choose motifs or monograms, running stitches or graphics, the possibilities are endless!

My Sweater Canvas is a pullover with raglan sleeves that is knit from the top down. Without embellishment, it is a simple, easy-to-knit staple, sure to be a go-to favorite in your wardrobe. But by adding embroidery to the pullover, the basic sweater morphs into a bespoke piece that can be a true reflection of the personality of the wearer!

As with all my Canvas designs, this pattern was created with embroidery in mind. There are five “corridors” of knitting ready to be adorned with stitching once the knitting has been completed. The increases and decreases that comprise the piece have been constructed in such a way that you can opt to embroider the front and back, the top of the sleeves, the forearms or the long swath from wrist to hip. Or all of the above, if you’re bitten by the stitching bug!

The sweater is knit from the top down, meaning the maker can try the sweater on for a truly customized fit. I recommend this project for beginners who are looking to try their hand at a garment, as well as for advanced knitters who would like to try a fresh approach to embroidery.

Pattern Notes
The yoke of this pullover is worked in one piece from the top down, beginning with a provisional cast-on. The sleeves are placed on hold while the body is worked in the round to the bottom edge, then finished with an I-Cord Bind-Off. The sleeves are placed back on the needle(s) and worked in the round to the cuff, where they are finished with an I-Cord Bind-Off. Finally, the provisional stitches are unzipped and the neck is finished as for the body and sleeves.
