To date, all of my embroidered knitting designs have been for pieces to be worn, with great care taken to make sure that the embroidery didn’t effect wearability. Removing this requirement really freed me to explore how to use the underlying garter stitch structure, the knitted shapes and the color palette to present my ideas more comprehensively. I used embroidery to add depth, texture, color and patterns. To my way of thinking, the result adds movement to the piece, inviting the eye to rove throughout the complex layers.
This tapestry is comprised of four blocks, each featuring knitted geometric shapes. These patterns were the foundation for the application of embroidery, as I worked to connect the panels with additional stitching. I played with negative space and employed a variety of embroidery techniques to encourage the feeling of movement throughout the tapestry. The result is a truly unique piece that blends a multitude of mediums in a modern way.
